Ghanaian king of dancehall Shatta Wale spoke in a recent interview with Adom FM about his weed smoking habits, saying he was once almost addicted to the recreational drug.
According to the multiple award-winning artiste, he began to smoke weed excessively when he took a break to learn music production. “After 2003, I went into exile. That time I used to smoke a lot,” he told Adom FM. “The weed I have smoked is more than three commercial bank buildings. But as you grow you need to change. I don’t smoke any more.”
The dance hall star, who was recently paid a whopping $40, 000 for a 5 minute performance at the Glo-CAF awards, explained that his covenant with God was the reason he quit smoking. “I felt I had to get a covenant with God because I didn’t understand why I could play all those beats but my songs weren’t making hits. So I promised God that if he gave me another chance I will change a lot of things about my life and I made sure I mentioned his name in all my songs, and I got the big song finally.”
He also added that he realized he relied on weed to give out energetic performances, so he had to try and stop smoking it to see how well he would perform on stage without getting high. He says he finally quit in 2013.
