Iranian goalkeeper arrested for posting ‘indecent’ photos of himself with women

Sosha Makani, goalkeeper for Iranian team Persepolis and member of Iran’s national team, was arrested last week for allegedly breaking Iranian cyber laws. Specifically, for posing in largely innocuous photos that the country’s authorities have deemed indecent.

Several photos of Makani and the ladies popped up on social media during the past week, and they are deemed to have broken Iran’s cyber laws. The country is a majority Shia Islamic republic. Here are some of the photos in question:

The goalkeeper, who claims his account was hacked, has since deleted the photos, claiming he did not personally post them.

What Does Iran Law Says?

An article on the campaign for human rights clarifies issues in this context. “According to Article 17 of the cyber crimes law, “Any person who publishes private or family photos or videos of others through the Internet without their permission, in such a way that causes them harm or disrepute, will be punishable from 91 days to two years in prison or fined from five million rials (about $168) to 40 million rials (about $1340) or both.”

The player has since been released and resumed trainnings with his teammates, while authorities proceed with investigations.
